Traditional surgical procedures are always elective.
The common procedures are:
Discectomy:
All or part of the problem disc is removed it is the most common surgical procedure used to correct discs In this procedure, part of the disc is removed, hopefully eliminating the pain. Disc removal procedures have been performed for over 60 years. The modern version is much improved, compared to the overly invasive procedures done years ago.
Laminectomy/Laminotomy:
The bony plate (lamina) that protects your spinal canal and spinal cord may need to be re-shaped to create more room for your spinal cord. Plasty means "to shape." So a laminoplasty shapes the lamina to keep it from pressing on your spinal cord. A procedure that reaches the cervical spine (neck) from the back of the neck, which is then reconstructed to make more room for the spinal canal./ At the back of each vertebra, you have a bony plate that protects your spinal canal and spinal cord; it's called the lamina. It may be pressing on your spinal cord, so the surgeon may make more room for the cord by removing all or part of the lamina.
All or part of the lamina is removed to relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve.
Minimmally Invasive Procedure for Sciatica :
Intradiscal Eletrothermoplasty: A heated wire is inserted into the problem disc through a needle and used to destroy the tiny nerve fibres causing the sciatica.
Radiofrequency Discal Nucleoplasty: A radio frequency probe is inserted into the problem disc through a needle and highly-focused radio frequency field is used to vapourise some of the disc, reducing its size and thereby decompressing the disc to reduce the pressure on the sciatic nerve.
